11th of Tammuz – י״א תמוז


• Rabbi Atiyah Houri, a prominent sage and educator of the Jewish community in Djerba, Tunisia, and author of the rabbinic work Neta Reva'i, passed away in Djerba, Tunisia, and is buried in the Jewish cemetery there. He passed away in 1972 (5732) on 11 Tammuz, remembered for his dedication to preserving traditional Torah education.


• Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Zidichov, son of Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Eichenstein of Zidichov and author of the foundational Hasidic and Kabbalistic texts Ateret Tzvi and Tzvi LaTzaddik, passed away in Zidichov, Galicia (present-day Zhydachiv, Ukraine), and is buried in the old Jewish cemetery there. He passed away in 1831 (5591) on 11 Tammuz. He was a premier leader of Galician Hasidism and a highly revered spiritual master.


• Rabbi Moshe Maimon, distinguished Dayan of the community of Gabès, Tunisia, and author of the Torah commentary and homiletics work Yashir Moshe, passed away in Gabès, Tunisia, and is buried in the Jewish cemetery there. He passed away in 1951 (5711) on 11 Tammuz, recognized for his profound halachic scholarship and leadership in North Africa.


• Rabbi Aaron Moshe Taubes, son of Rabbi Yaakov Taubes and author of the prominent responsa collection Karnei Re'em, passed away in Iași, Romania, and is buried in the Jewish cemetery there. He passed away in 1852 (5612) on 11 Tammuz. He served as the Chief Rabbi of Iași (Jassy), Romania, and was a leading halachic authority of his era.


• Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman, son of Rabbi Naftali Beynus Wasserman and author of the authoritative Talmudic analysis Kovetz Shiurim, was murdered in Troki (Trakai), Lithuania, and buried in a mass grave near there. He was murdered Al Kiddush Hashem in the Holocaust in 1941 (5701) on 11 Tammuz. He was the Rosh Yeshiva of Baranovich and one of the closest disciples of the Chofetz Chaim.
