Grave of Rav Ovadia Yosef - Maran
Harav Ovadia Yosef, universally known across the globe as Maran (Our Master), was the crowning glory of Sephardic Jewry and one of the most phenomenal, revolutionary halachic giants in the last thousand years of Jewish history. Serving as the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel (Rishon LeZion) and the undisputed spiritual leader of millions of Yidden, his photographic memory, encyclopedic mastery of Torah, and fierce love for the common man transformed the landscape of the generation.
He single-handedly restored the pride and halachic independence of Sephardic Jewry through his lifework motto: “Lehachzir atarah leyoshnah”—To restore the crown to its former glory.
His Meteoric Rise and Absolute Genius
Maran was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1920, and moved with his family to the Old City of Jerusalem as a young child of four. His family was desperately poor, and his father tried to pull him out of the yeshiva to work in the family grocery store.
The Rescue by Porat Yosef: Recognizing his otherworldly potential, the Rosh Yeshiva of Porat Yosef, Harav Ezra Attiya, arrived at the grocery store and offered to work behind the counter himself so that the young Ovadia could return to his learning.
Photographic Memory: Rav Ovadia possessed a literal photographic memory (Baki b'Shas u'Poskim). He could quote thousands of obscure halachic responsa verbatim, including the exact volume, page, and line number of any text spanning from the Geonim and Rishonem down to the latest contemporary pamphlets.
The Egypt Rabbinate: In 1947, at the young age of 27, he was asked to move to Cairo, Egypt, to serve as the head of the Rabbinical Court (Av Beis Din). Despite immense spiritual loneliness and political volatility, he aggressively upgraded the local standards of Kashrus and Taharas Hamishpacha (family purity), laying down a fearless blueprint for his lifetime of public leadership.
The Masterpiece of Halacha: Chazon Ovadia and Yabia Omer
Rav Ovadia was a prolific author whose sefarim are standard staples in every Beis Medrash and Torah home today. His writing style was marked by an exhaustive analysis of every opinion, culminating in a clear, practical bottom line.
1. Shailos U'teshuvos Yabia Omer & Yechaveh Da'at
These multi-volume sets of halachic responsa are masterpieces of legal genius. A single answer regarding a modern issue might cite hundreds of previous authorities, weaving them together seamlessly. His overarching halachic philosophy was heavily focused on the rule of "Koacha d'heteira adif" (the power of leniency is preferable). He fought bitterly against unnecessary stringencies that placed undue burdens on the poor or the broken-hearted.
2. Chazon Ovadia & Yalkut Yosef
He spent decades codifying practical law according to the rulings of the Mechaber (Rabbi Yosef Karo, author of the Shulchan Aruch), whom Sephardic Jews accept as the supreme halachic authority of Eretz Yisrael. His rulings were adapted into the multi-volume Yalkut Yosef by his son, Harav Yitzchak Yosef.
The Agunah Crisis of the Yom Kippur War: Following the devastating 1973 Yom Kippur War, nearly one thousand Israeli soldiers were missing in action, leaving their wives trapped as Agunos(unable to remarry due to lack of halachic proof of death). Rav Ovadia took this crushing burden upon his own shoulders. He spent months without sleep, sifting through military intelligence, forensic data, and complex halachic precedents. Through his sheer genius and deep empathy, he successfully permitted every single one of those hundreds of women to remarry, preventing an unimaginable national tragedy.
The Father of the Masses
Though he could easily sit in an ivory tower of pure scholarship, Rav Ovadia chose to step down into the streets to lift up the broken spirits of working-class Jews. For decades, Sephardic Yidden in Israel had suffered from systemic socio-economic neglect and spiritual erosion.
The Saturday Night Shiur: Every Saturday night, his famous shiur (lecture) at the Yazdim Synagogue in Jerusalem was broadcast across the world. He spoke not in complex academic jargon, but in a warm, vernacular style filled with parables, humor, and sharp wit, making the highest levels of Torah accessible to the simple blacksmith, market vendor, and academic alike.
Political Revolution: To give a political voice and financial infrastructure to religious Sephardic Jewry, he founded the Shas political party. Through this movement, he established a massive network of subsidized religious schools, daycare centers, and chessed organizations (El HaMa'ayan), bringing hundreds of thousands of secular and traditional Yidden back to their roots in a massive Teshuvah movement.
His Historic Funeral and Legacy
Maran passed away on the 3rd of Cheshvan, 2013 (5774) at the age of 93. His passing triggered a spontaneous national outpouring of grief unlike anything ever seen in modern times.
The Largest Funeral in Israeli History: An estimated 850,000 to one million Yidden packed the streets of Jerusalem for his funeral. The entire city ground to a complete halt as waves of men, women, and children from every single sector of Jewish life—Chassidim, Litvaks, Sephardim, and entirely secular Israelis—wept openly behind his coffin.
His Kever in Sanhedria: He was buried in the Sanhedria Cemetery in Jerusalem, alongside his righteous wife, Rabbanit Margalit. For the past decade, Kever Maran has become an immense makom tefillahoperating 24 hours a day.
The Site Today: Due to the perpetual, massive influx of mispallelim (worshippers), local authorities and the Jerusalem Municipality heavily overhauled the surrounding streets of Sanhedria. They constructed wide, reinforced stone plazas, implemented permanent security boundaries, and created structured prayer corridors around his resting place. Thousands of Yidden arrive daily, and especially on his Yahrzeit on the 3rd of Cheshvan, to daven in the merit of the giant who carried the entire weight of the nation on his shoulders.
