Rabbi Yitzchok Scheiner (1922–2021) was an outstanding Israeli-American Haredi rabbi, educator, and public leader. He served for decades as the Rosh Yeshiva (dean) of the Kamenitz Yeshiva in Jerusalem and was a senior member of the Council of Torah Sages (Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah) of the Degel HaTorah political party.

His life was a remarkable journey: born and raised in the United States, he ultimately became one of the senior elder statesmen of the elite, European-style Lithuanian yeshiva world in Israel.

From Pittsburgh Public School to the World of Torah

Rav Yitzchok’s background unique among mainstream Israeli Gedolim (major rabbinic leaders) because he grew up completely immersed in American culture.

• American Upbringing: He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to religious immigrants from Poland. He attended local public schools, graduating from Peabody High School in 1938.

  
  

• The Turning Point: While he was a teenager, a visiting rabbi named Avraham Bender recognized the young man’s intellectual potential. He convinced Yitzchok’s parents to send their son away to study in New York's budding yeshiva system.

  
  

• Elite American Training: During the 1940s, Rav Yitzchok studied at Yeshiva College (the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary) and Yeshiva Torah Vodaas. In Torah Vodaas, he became a primary disciple of the legendary Rabbi Shlomo Heiman, mastering the intricate, deep logical systems of Talmudic analysis.

  
  

Marrying into Rabbinic Royalty

In the late 1940s, Rav Yitzchok married Esther Leah Leibowitz, which firmly cemented his entry into the elite inner circles of the European Torah world.

His wife was a granddaughter of Rabbi Boruch Ber Leibowitz, the legendary author of the Birkas Shmueland the original Rosh Yeshiva of the Kamenitz Yeshiva in Europe. Through this marriage, Rav Yitzchok became a key link in preserving and continuing the illustrious intellectual legacy of the Kamenitz dynasty.

Leadership of the Kamenitz Yeshiva

Before taking the helm in Israel, Rav Yitzchok spent part of the 1960s teaching Torah to students at a yeshiva in Montreux, Switzerland.

Following the passing of his father-in-law, Rabbi Moshe Bernstein (who had re-established Kamenitz in Israel after its European destruction), Rav Yitzchok moved to Jerusalem to head the institution.

• He initially co-led the yeshiva alongside his brother-in-law, Rabbi Asher Lichtenstein.

  
  

• Following his brother-in-law's passing in 1998, Rav Yitzchok became the central, senior Rosh Yeshiva of the entire Kamenitz infrastructure in Jerusalem, working alongside his nephews and sons.

  
  

• He was beloved by thousands of students for his deep, analytical lectures and his remarkably accessible, refined demeanor—frequently attributed to his unique synthesis of American warmth and European rabbinic nobility.

Public Leadership

In the 1990s, due to his immense stature, absolute integrity, and decades of educational success, he was appointed to the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah (Council of Torah Sages) of the Lithuanian Degel HaTorahmovement. Despite his high political ranking, he deliberately avoided political combat, preferring to focus entirely on the spiritual welfare and educational needs of the community.

Passing

Rabbi Yitzchok Scheiner passed away in Jerusalem on January 31, 2021, at the age of 98, after contracting COVID-19.

Tragically, his passing occurred on the exact same day as fellow elder sage Rabbi Meshulam Dovid Soloveitchik. Despite intense pandemic lockdowns at the time, an estimated 8,000 students and mourners filled the streets of Jerusalem to attend his funeral and accompany this American-born giant to his final resting place.
