Rabbi Shmuel Berezovsky - Slonimer Rebbe
Rabbi Shmuel Berezovsky (born 1942), widely referred to by his followers as the Slonimer Rebbe, is the current spiritual leader of the Slonim Hasidic dynasty. He has led the movement from its central headquarters in Jerusalem since the passing of his legendary father in the year 2000.
A highly respected figure across the Haredi world, he carries forward a dynasty that famously synthesizes intense, emotionally passionate Hasidism with the rigorous, structured analytical intellectualism of the Lithuanian yeshiva world.
Lineage and Inheritance
Rav Shmuel was born into a family tasked with pulling a dynasty back from total extinction.
His Father: Rabbi Sholom Noach Berezovsky (the Nesivos Sholom). His father was arguably one of the most influential Hasidic thinkers of the late 20th century, whose masterwork Nesivos Sholom is studied globally by Hasidim, Lithuanian non-Hasidim, and Modern Orthodox communities alike.
Rebuilding From Ashes: The original Slonim Hasidic infrastructure in Eastern Europe was entirely wiped out by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Rav Shmuel grew up watching his father meticulously gather the few scattered survivors in Israel, piece together the lost oral traditions of pre-war Europe, and rebuild the court from scratch.
Upon his father’s passing on August 8, 2000 (7 Av 5760), Rav Shmuel ascended the throne as Grand Rebbe.
Leadership Style: The Educator and Guide
True to the legacy of his father, who spent decades serving as a Rosh Yeshiva (dean) before becoming Rebbe, Rav Shmuel approaches his leadership primarily through the lens of a highly detailed, personalized educator.
Focus on Avodah (Spiritual Work): Slonim Hasidism differs from many other groups because it heavily downplays the concept of the Rebbe as an unapproachable "miracle worker." Instead, Rav Shmuel teaches that a Rebbe is a spiritual guide meant to push the follower to do hard, daily, internal character refinement.
The Weekly Shmuessen: He is famous for delivering weekly, deeply practical lectures (shmuessen) to his students. He focuses heavily on the classic pillars of the Slonim path: intense, vocal prayer, unconditional Emunah (faith), and absolute honesty in personal conduct.
Internal Dynastic Dynamics
It is important to note that the Slonim dynasty experienced an internal rift in 1981, prior to Rav Shmuel’s father taking office. This split resulted in two distinct branches of the movement operating today in Israel:

Following the tradition of his elite lineage, Rav Shmuel has begun publishing his own regular compilations of Hasidic philosophy and ethical discourses. His writings, highly valued by his thousands of disciples, expand on his father’s modern classic frameworks, adapting deep kabbalistic and psychological Hasidic concepts into clear, scannable directives for thriving spiritually in the 21st century.
