Rabbi Sheftel Meir Neuberger (1943–2021) was a dynamic communal leader, an accomplished Talmudic scholar, and the long-time president (Menahel) of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel (Ner Israel Rabbinical College) in Baltimore, Maryland.

Unlike many of the European-born founders of American yeshivas, Rabbi Sheftel was deeply American and born directly into the fabric of Ner Israel:

• Early Years: He entered Ner Israel as a student at age 16, excelling under the guidance of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman, and the Mashgiach, Rabbi Dovid Kronglass. For the first half of his career, Rabbi Neuberger’s focus was primarily inside the study hall. He served as a highly regarded Maggid Shiur (Talmudic lecturer) at Ner Israel for many years, known for his high energy and ability to connect with young American students.

However, as the yeshiva grew and his father needed assistance managing its vast operations, Rabbi Sheftel made a pivot. In 1987, he left his full-time teaching position to become the assistant president. Following his father’s passing in 2005, he officially succeeded him as the President (Menahel) of Ner Israel, steering the institution into the 21st century.

For decades, he served as the Chazzan (cantor) at Ner Israel during the High Holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur). His passionate, raw, and emotionally charged prayers became iconic. Inheriting his father's keen political instincts, Rabbi Sheftel maintained close, highly respected relationships with local, state, and federal officials—including mayors, governors, and congressional representatives. Passing

Rabbi Sheftel Neuberger passed away on February 9, 2021, at the age of 77, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Even during his illness, family and faculty noted that he confronted his diagnosis with immense vigor and positivity, refusing to let it stop his active management of the yeshiva.

His passing was publicly mourned by thousands of alumni worldwide, as well as civic leaders across Maryland, who remembered him as a leader who could powerfully fill any room he walked into, yet possessed a soft, empathetic heart for every individual student.
