Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu (1929–2010) was a towering Sephardic rabbi, posek (halachic decisor), and spiritual leader who served as the Rishon LeZion (Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel) from 1983 to 1993.

1. Love for the Land and Soldiers

Rav Eliyahu viewed the State of Israel and the return of Jews to their ancestral homeland as a profound step in the divine process of redemption. He harbored an immense, legendary love for IDF soldiers, frequently visiting army bases to bless troops, answer their halachic questions, and boost their morale.

2. Guarding the Land

He was an uncompromising defender of the territorial integrity of the Land of Israel. He strongly opposed any territorial concessions or peace agreements that involved surrendering land.

• During the 2005 Gaza Disengagement, he became a fierce spiritual leader of the protest movement, famously declaring that the evacuation of Jewish settlements would ultimately fail through divine intervention. When the expulsion went through, it deeply broken his heart, but he spent the remaining years of his life comforting and spiritually rebuilding the displaced communities.

The Jonathan Pollard Champion

Rav Eliyahu was deeply committed to pidyon shvuyim (the redemption of captives). He became the official spiritual mentor and a fierce public advocate for Jonathan Pollard, the American naval analyst imprisoned in 1985 for passing classified information to Israel.

• Rav Eliyahu traveled to the United States multiple times explicitly to visit Pollard in his federal prison cell.

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu passed away on June 7, 2010, at the age of 81, following a prolonged illness involving heart complications.

His funeral procession in Jerusalem was a massive, cross-communal event that drew an estimated 100,000 mourners. He was buried on Har HaMenuchot. The crowds reflected his unique legacy: side-by-side stood black-hatted Haredi scholars, knitted-kippah wearing National Religious youths, IDF soldiers, and thousands of ordinary traditional Israelis who simply knew him as a warm, accessible father figure who loved every segment of the Jewish nation.
