Rabbi Aryeh Leib Finkel (July 28, 1931 – August 9, 2016) was a preeminent Israeli Haredi rabbi, educator, and a key pillar of the Mir Yeshiva dynasty. For over half a century, he served as a central spiritual guide to thousands of students, eventually becoming the Rosh Yeshiva (dean) of the Mir Yeshiva's prominent Brachfeld branch in Modi'in Illit and a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah (Council of Torah Sages) of Degel HaTorah.

Noble Rabbinic Lineage

Rabbi Finkel was born into Lithuanian rabbinic aristocracy, possessing deep familial roots within the Mir Yeshiva system:

• Father: Rabbi Chaim Zev Finkel, who founded Yeshivas Heichal HaTorah in Tel Aviv and later served as the Mashgiach Ruchani (spiritual supervisor) of the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem.

  
  

• Paternal Grandfather: Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel, the legendary Rosh Yeshiva who famously led the Mir in Poland, preserved it through World War II, and rebuilt it in Jerusalem.

  
  

• Great-Grandfather: Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel, universally known as the Alter of Slabodka, a founding father of the modern Mussar (ethics) movement.

• Maternal Grandfather: He was also the grandson of the famous Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem.

Decades as the Heart of the Mir

In his youth, Rabbi Finkel studied at the Slabodka and Ponevezh yeshivas before joining the Mir Yeshiva Kollel in Jerusalem following his marriage to Rebbetzin Esther Gittel Yudelewitz (daughter of Rabbi Shmuel Aharon Yudelewitz).

He subsequently stepped into positions of leadership at the Mir in Jerusalem under the guidance of the legendary Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Chaim Shmuelevitz:

• The Mashgiach: He inherited his father's mantle as the Mashgiach Ruchani of the Mir in Jerusalem, serving in this critical guidance role for decades. He was known for his extreme humility, emotional warmth, accessibility, and deep personal care for every single student.

  
  

• The Voice of High Holidays: He possessed a beautiful, deeply moving voice and served for many years as the Shaliach Tzibbur (cantor/prayer leader) for the defining High Holiday services at the Mir, leading the massive assembly through the Mussaf prayers of Rosh Hashanah and the Kol Nidrei and Mussaf prayers of Yom Kippur.

  
  

Leadership of Mir Brachfeld

In 2005, a major new branch of the Mir Yeshiva was established in the neighborhood of Brachfeld within the city of Modi'in Illit to accommodate the exploding growth of the student body.

Rabbi Aryeh Finkel was appointed its Rosh Yeshiva. Under his leadership, the Brachfeld branch grew into a premier Torah center in its own right, mirroring the unique spirit, intensity of study, and warmth of the main Jerusalem campus.

Passing and Legacy

Despite facing serious health challenges in his final years—including complex medical treatments after a severe fall during Sabbath prayers—he continued to lead and counsel his students with tremendous joy and dedication.

On August 9, 2016, at the age of 85, Rabbi Finkel collapsed in his home in Modi'in Illit and passed away. His multi-stage funeral procession began at the Mir Yeshiva in Brachfeld, proceeded through the main Mir Yeshiva in the Mea Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem, and concluded with his burial on Har HaMenuchos. His legacy of profound Torah scholarship and sensitive mentorship continues through his thousands of students and his son, Rabbi Binyomin Finkel, who serves as a prominent Mashgiach and spiritual leader.
