He stood out because he was completely unafraid to tackle taboo or uncomfortable topics—such as trauma, addiction, the darker sides of dating, and the challenges of the digital age—with extreme candor and warmth.

He famously described his educational philosophy as being both the "good cop and bad cop at the same time."He rejected the popularized notion of enabling bad behavior in the name of unconditional love, choosing instead to hold his students to high spiritual and moral standards while simultaneously showering them with the devotion of a loving father.
